CBS has announced its renewals for the 2021-22 season, including B Positive and United States of Al, two comedies from mega-producer Chuck Lorre.

At the moment, Chuck Lorre Productions has three more series on CBS. That includes the multi-camera drama “Mom,” starring Allison Janney, which just ended after eight seasons. “Bob Hearts Abishola” and “Young Sheldon” are the other two. The former was picked up for a third season in March, while the latter was renewed in February.

B Positive, starring Thomas Middleditch and Annaleigh Ashford, was the first new CBS show to premiere during the 2020/21 broadcast season, and it was the second new show of the season to obtain a back order, following ABC’s Big Sky.

Marco Pennette, a former Mom co-executive producer, created the show. B Positive is based on a true story about a therapist and newly divorced father (Middleditch) who is in need of a kidney donor until he meets a rough-around-the-edges lady from his past (Ashford) who generously donates her own. They develop an unusual friendship and go on a trip that will forever impact their lives. Izzy G, Sara Rue, Kether Donohue, and Terrence Terrell co-star.

Riley (Parker Young), a Marine combat veteran attempting to transition to civilian life in Ohio, and Awalmir, or Al (Adhir Kalyan), the translator who served with Riley’s unit in Afghanistan and has come to establish a new life in America, are the central characters in “United States of Al.”

B Positive and United States of AI’s renewals put an end to CBS’ existing scripted series for the season, while two of the network’s bubble programs, SEAL Team and Clarice, are in discussions to transfer to Paramount+. All Rise and The Unicorn, both in their second seasons, were canceled by the network earlier Saturday.

It might take a season or more for a comedy series to establish its qualities and develop a following. Early episodes of “Friends,” “Seinfeld,” and “The Office,” for example, bore little similarity to renowned episodes from the programs’ peaks.

CBS had already made decisions on the most of its veteran programs prior to the pre-upfronts week. The broadcast network has renewed a dozen scripted shows and five unscripted series, as well as the long-running newsmagazines 60 Minutes and 48 Hours, prior to the weekend. Meanwhile, the finales of MacGyver, NCIS: New Orleans, and Mom were all confirmed months ago.

Jim Patterson, a former executive producer and co-showrunner on Two and a Half Men, has joined Chuck Lorre’s “United States of Al” show as executive producer and co-showrunner with Pennette. The pair EP alongside Lorre and it is produced by Warner Bros Television in association with Chuck Lorre Productions.

Early on in its existence, the show was chastised for what were perceived to be stereotyped depictions.

United States of Al” is currently growing into its premise. Last week’s show was spot-on, with a hilarious segment on how military personnel have a propensity to focus just on the vehicle payments and ignore the exorbitant interest rates when they are duped into bad auto deals. That’s a show where military experts offer exclusive information.

So far, CBS has introduced six new programs, three of which are based on current or previous franchises: NCIS: Hawai’i and FBI: International will expand their own worlds, while the network is also bringing back the CSI franchise with CSI: Vegas, which will include a mix of returning and new cast members from the original program. The others are comedies Ghosts, starring Rose McIver (iZombie) and Utkarsh Ambudkar (The Mindy Project, Brockmire) and Smallwood, starring Pete Holmes, and medical drama Good Sam, starring Sophia Bush.
