Edward Furlong will reprise his role as John Connor in Terminator: Dark Fate, according to director James Cameron. The news was revealed at the film’s Hall H panel at Comic-Con International in San Diego on Friday.

Cameron opened the conversation remotely via a webcast from the set of the upcoming “Avatar” sequels, noting that fans adored older “Terminator” characters like Sarah Connor and wanted to know how they reacted to the events of the previous films.

In his debut cinematic appearance, Furlong played Conner, the son of actress Linda Hamilton’s character Sarah, in the 1991 sequel Terminator 2: Judgment Day. According to Deadline, the new science-fiction marks his first return to the character since the 1991 feature.

Nick Stahl, Christian Bale, and Jason Clarke all played the character in the later sequels, but Dark Fate skips those films and functions as a direct successor to the two original episodes.

Along with the revelation of John Connor’s return, James Cameron used Comic-Con to get the audience excited about the sequel by showing a sizzle reel of Sarah Connor talking about how she spends her days chasing Terminators. Hunting down Terminators seemed to be the ideal employment for Connor at this point in her life. When it comes down to it, Cameron honestly feels that the franchise is being reinvented. He had something to say about it.

“You’ve got Tim Miller fresh off of Deadpool, me coming back to the franchise almost three decades later…(we’re) coming up with crazy new stuff you’ve never seen before… One thing we kept circling around, ‘Do we want to bring Sarah back? And there is no Sarah but Linda, so how to do we talk Linda into being in this movie?'”

In addition, the panel confirmed that Dark Fate will be classified R. Tim Miller remarked of the film, “It’s officially R-rated” “and it’s because the fans kind of demanded it.”

“The DNA of Terminator is an R-rated fucking movie,” he said, “to not do it R felt disingenuous to the source material. I got so many takes of Linda saying ‘fuck.’ It’s amazing.”

In addition to the Furlong news, the Dark Fate Comic-Con panel revealed additional details about how Arnold Schwarzenegger, who has stated that he is “addicted to Terminator,” will play a role in the plot.

The sequel to “Terminator 2: Judgement Day,” “Terminator: Dark Fate,” will take place 27 years after “Terminator 2: Judgement Day.” Linda Hamilton, who played Sarah Connor, John’s mother, in the first two films, joins Furlong in the cast. Sarah Connor will deal with the consequences of her actions in “Terminator 2: Judgment Day,” where she destroyed Cyberdyne Systems and presumably every trace of Skynet and its army of Terminators, according to Miller (“Deadpool”). Given the film’s teaser’s robotic mayhem, it’s reasonable to infer that Judgement Day is still on the horizon.
