Tim Curry’s depiction of Pennywise in the 1990 TV miniseries It gave an entire generation of kids nightmares, but think how terrifying it must’ve been to face him in person.

In a recent interview with Screen Geek, Tony Dakota, who plays Georgie, recalls one specific scene in which things became a little too terrifying for him. It happened during the moment in which his boat slides down the sewer, and as Curry explains, his portrayal was so amazing that Dakota was scared of him.

“There was a point in IT, at the beginning of the movie, this little kid called Georgie is sailing his boat down the gutter and it goes down the drain, and Pennywise grabs it. And Georgie puts his hand down the drain and I grab it and I suggest that he joins me, and say, ‘Down here, you’ll float.’ And he stopped and said, ‘Tim, you’re scaring me.’ I said, ‘Gee, I’m so sorry, but that’s what I’m supposed to be doing.'”

When asked if Dakota has been in therapy since, Curry replied, “I hope so. I think he needed quite a lot.”

Curry stated that he is looking forward to Bill Skarsgard’s portrayal of the role.

“Well, I like [Bill] Skarsgard very much, I think he’s very clever. It’ll be interesting what sort of clown face he puts on, because it’s not an obvious clown face at all. I’ve seen the trailer and you can’t really see him at all. So I’m fascinated to see it. He’s very good.”

Curry, on the other hand, had one proposal. “I hope they make the end better,” he stated. “On TV, I turned into a sort of giant spider, and it was not very scary or convincing.”

While Tim Curry may have sympathized with the young actors in the original IT, the current members of The Losers Club were all great. The youthful ensemble gives nuanced and fascinating performances in the new picture, and the R-Rating allows the kids to act like 13-year-olds in real life. It’ll be interesting to see how their careers grow, especially Sophia Lillis, who is really fantastic.

Now that Pennywise has been confined to the sewers for a full 27 years, New Line and Andy Muschietti are planning Chapter 2 for a 2019 release. The Losers Club has already picked their dream cast, however whether the Powers That Be listen to their recommendations is a another matter completely.
