Keira Knightley has been nominated for two Academy Awards and has acted in blockbusters like the Pirates of the Caribbean films, but not everyone is a fan.

During an interview with the Independent, John Carney, the director of Knightley’s 2013 musical romantic comedy Begin Again, had some harsh words for the actress, stating that he was “disenchanted” after working with her on the film.

“I didn’t enjoy that experience of paparazzi and fabulous openings. The movie star world is not something that ever appealed to me,” John told The Independent. “I like working with actors and I wanted to come back to what I knew and enjoy film-making again – not that I didn’t enjoy Begin Again but Keira has an entourage that follow her everywhere so it’s very hard to get any real work done.”

Keira portrays a songwriter who unites with a disgraced record label boss (Ruffalo) after her accomplished musician lover (Levine) dumps her.

Carney, whose most recent film is Sing Street, went on to say that Keira’s singing and guitar skills made it difficult to make the film’s music “seem real.”

“And as much as I tried to make it work I think that she didn’t quite come out as a guitar-playing singer-songwriter,” he remarked.

“I learned that I’ll never make a film with supermodels again,” Carney said in response to a question about what he learned from the 2013 film after blaming Knightley for the critical and box office flop.

He added, “Keira‘s thing is to hide who you are and I don’t think you can be an actor and do that. I like to work with curious, proper film actors as opposed to movie stars. I don’t want to rubbish Keira, but you know it’s hard being a film actor and it requires a certain level of honesty and self-analysis that I don’t think she’s ready for yet and I certainly don’t think she was ready for on that film.”

“Mark Ruffalo is a fantastic actor and Adam Levine is a joy to work with and actually quite unpretentious and not a bit scared of exposing himself on camera and exploring who he is as an individual,” Carney said of the film’s male protagonists, Mark Ruffalo and Adam Levine. “I think that that’s what you need as an actor; you need to not be afraid to find out who you really are when the camera’s rolling. Keira’s thing is to hide who you are and I don’t think you can be an actor and do that.”

Knightley has been nominated for an Academy Award twice, once for best actress in Pride and Prejudice in 2006 and again for best supporting actress in The Imitation Game last year.

Knightley began performing as a kid and has received two Oscar nominations: the first for Atonement in 2007 and the second for The Imitation Game in 2014. Knightley has also played on Broadway and was rated No. 2 on Forbes’ annual highest-earning actresses list in 2008.

Knightley has appeared in a number of fashion advertisements, including one for Chanel.
