Police said on Monday that Whitney Houston was found “underwater and apparently unconscious” in a bathtub in a Beverly Hills hotel room.

Lt. Mark Rosen of the BHPD stated at a press conference held at city hall that the singer was discovered by a member of her personal staff at about 3:30 p.m., and security was immediately notified. Rosen declined to comment on the purported discovery of prescription medicine bottles in Houston’s hotel room. According to the Los Angeles Times and other news sites, detectives seized multiple bottles of prescription medicines from the hotel suite. “As of right now the investigation is sealed because it is pending,” Rosen said.

“Our intent at Beverly Hills Police Department is not to fuel the speculation or rumours that are circulating right now,” Lt Rosen stated. “We can’t comment on where those rumours have come from.”

The autopsy was conducted on Sunday, according to assistant chief coroner Ed Winter, but the cause of death for the 48-year-old would not be determined until further toxicology testing were completed in six to eight weeks.

Officials said they had no reason to suspect foul play. According to law enforcement officials, no illicit narcotics were discovered in Houston’s hotel room.

According to Ed Winter, assistant head of the Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office, there were prescription medication bottles in the room. “There weren’t a lot of prescription bottles,” he said, without going into further detail. “You probably have just as many prescription bottles in your medicine cabinet.’’

The pop music legend was pronounced dead at 4 p.m. on Feb. 11, on the eve of the Grammy Awards, after paramedics tried but failed to resuscitate her. The native of Newark, New Jersey, had flown to Beverly Hills to attend mentor Clive Davis’ annual pre-Grammy Awards celebration at the Hilton. Numerous media accounts described her conduct in the days leading up to her death as unpredictable.

According to TMZ, Houston ingested alcoholic drinks shortly before her death; the website also stated that Houston’s remains will be transferred Monday on the private aircraft of Houston friend and director Tyler Perry to the East Coast for a burial in New Jersey.

The body was returned to the family by the coroner’s office late Monday morning. According to two people who spoke with Houston’s family, the singer will be transferred to New Jersey. The two, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because they were not allowed to speak for the family, said Houston’s relatives suggested a wake on Thursday and a funeral on Friday at Newark’s Prudential Center, which has a capacity of around 18,000 people.

Whitney Houston, who was born in Newark, began her singing career as a kid at the city’s New Hope Baptist Church. Her cousin, singer Dionne Warwick, was also a member of the choir.

Billy Watson, Houston’s brother-in-law, denied to ABCNews.com on Monday that the singer had any intention of committing himself.

“Oh, no, this is accidental,” Billy told ABCNews.com. “She wouldn’t have left her daughter like that. She wouldn’t have done that to her daughter,” he said, referring to 18-year-old Bobbi Kristina Brown, who is said to be distraught over her mother’s death.

Meanwhile, the music industry paid tribute to Houston’s life and work on Sunday evening at the 54th annual Grammy Awards in Los Angeles, with host LL Cool J starting the event with a prayer for the singer.
