According to physicians at Los Robles Regional Medical Center, actor Martin Lawrence regained consciousness on Wednesday after sliding into a coma caused by severe heat exhaustion while exercising.

Lawrence had put on multiple layers of clothes in a bid to “sweat off” the pounds for a forthcoming movie part and suffered heat stroke as a result. Lawrence arrived at the Los Robles Medical Center in Thousand Oaks, Calif., with a body temperature of 107 degrees.

According to Kris Carraway-Bowman, a spokesperson at Los Robles Regional Medical Center, Lawrence, who was upgraded from critical a day earlier, was expected to stay the same for the next few days.

“He’s definitely not out of the woods by any means, but this was a man who was near death who has made a miraculous comeback,” she said.

Lawrence is alert and receptive, but he still needs a ventilator to breathe, which prevents him from speaking.

Lawrence has previously struggled with both health and legal issues.

He was sentenced to two years probation and community service in September 1997 for his role in a nightclub brawl. The actor was also sentenced to a treatment program after pleading no contest to battery.

A statement from Lawrence’s publicist said he was not addressing a substance addiction problem.

Lawrence was also apprehended at Burbank Airport with a loaded weapon in his carry-on luggage. He was about to board a plane to Phoenix.

Life, Bad Boys, and Nothing to Lose are among his cinematic credits.
