Dan Harmon, the creator of the popular TV series “Community,” has stated that Chevy Chase frequently made racist jokes targeting Donald Glover on the show’s set.
During a conversation with The New Yorker, Harmon claimed that Chase made these comments in an effort to distract Glover while shooting the NBC sitcom.
“Chevy [Chase] was the first to recognize Donald’s exceptional talent, and he expressed his envy by attempting to unsettle Donald,” Harmon explained.
“I recall apologizing to Donald after a particularly difficult evening of Chevy’s inappropriate language, and Donald responded, ‘I don’t even worry about it.'”
Glover shared with The New Yorker that he viewed Chase as “struggling in the water.”
“I perceived Chevy as battling time—a true artist must accept that their reign will eventually end. I can’t assist him if he’s flailing in the water,” Glover said.
“However, I’m aware there’s a human being in there — he’s almost excessively human.”
When The New Yorker reached out to Chase for a statement, he expressed that he was “disheartened to learn” Glover “saw me in that manner.”
Glover, a talented singer with five recent Grammy nominations, has also earned two Emmys and Golden Globes for his work on “Atlanta.”
He created the show and serves as a writer, director, and actor on the successful FX comedy-drama.
Chase and Glover collaborated on “Community” for four seasons before Glover revealed that he would not be returning as a lead character in the fifth season.
Chase departed the series after the fourth season.
The “Saturday Night Live” veteran had a well-documented dispute with Harmon before choosing to leave the show, as reported by Deadline.
Chase was allegedly dissatisfied with the show’s direction and working conditions on multiple occasions.
Harmon made the news in January when a former colleague accused him of sexual misconduct.
Megan Ganz, a comedy writer who worked on “Community,” claimed that Harmon made advances towards her during their time together.
Harmon admitted to the harassment and offered an apology, as reported by Vanity Fair.
