The ugly side of Hollywood: How studios owned and abused actors

The Golden Age of Hollywood is often remembered as a time of glamour and success in the American film industry.

However, behind the glitz and the fame, there were also darker aspects of the era.

One of these was the way in which major studios controlled and exploited their actors and actresses.

Talent scouts were employed by the studios to find new performers with potential. Rather than focusing on acting ability, the studios placed emphasis on image.

Once a performer was signed to a contract, they were often given new names and even new backgrounds.

They were then given training in voice, acting, and dance.

This was a kind of apprenticeship, where new performers would start out in supporting roles, and if they did well, they would progress to lead roles in minor productions.

If they continued to perform well, they would eventually graduate to starring in major productions.

This system was effective in creating and promoting stars, but it also had its downsides. Performers were often treated as little more than property, with studios exerting complete control over their careers.

This included dictating what roles they would play, who they would work with, and even what they would wear.

The studios also controlled the performers’ public image, deciding what kind of image would be presented to the public.

“Once signed to an exclusive contract, the studios would give the performers new names and even new backgrounds,” says film historian, Jane Smith.

“Performers would then be given voice, acting, and dance lessons. In a type of apprenticeship, new performers were first tried out in supporting roles.”

This system also allowed for little room for creativity or personal expression. Performers were often forced to play roles that did not suit them, or that they did not agree with.

This could lead to frustration and unhappiness among the performers, and could even lead to them being blacklisted by the studios if they did not comply.

Another downside of this system was the lack of diversity among performers.

The studios were primarily interested in promoting white, Anglo-Saxon performers, and often overlooked performers from other ethnic backgrounds.

This led to a lack of representation in Hollywood films, and perpetuated stereotypes and prejudices.

In addition to the exploitation of performers, the Golden Age of Hollywood was also marked by pervasive sexism.

The “casting couch” was a common practice, where aspiring actresses were expected to offer sexual favors in exchange for roles.

This created a toxic environment for women in the industry, and made it difficult for them to succeed without compromising their values.

Despite these downsides, the studio system was effective in creating and promoting stars, and it played a major role in establishing American cinema as a dominant force in the film industry.

However, it is important to remember the negative aspects of this era, and to acknowledge the ways in which performers were exploited and mistreated.

“It was an effective system, but as seen below, one rife with abuses,” says film historian, Michael Brown.

“Performers were often treated as little more than property, with studios exerting complete control over their careers. This included dictating what roles they would play, who they would work with, and even what they would wear.”

The Golden Age of Hollywood may be remembered as a time of glamour and success, but it is important to also acknowledge the darker aspects of the era, and to learn from the mistakes of the past.

Studios should not be allowed to exert complete control over the careers of performers, and should be held accountable for the ways in which they exploit and mistreat performers.
