Shaquille O’Neal, the former NBA player, is worth a fortune, yet none of it will go to his children.

During a recent appearance on the financial podcast “Earn Your Leisure,” the NBA icon said he would never give money to any of his six children. And, while he admitted that his parenting style has made children “upset,” he has no intention of changing his ways.

“My kids are older now. They’re kinda upset with me. Not really upset, but they don’t understand. I tell them all the time. We ain’t rich. I’m rich,” O’Neal stated on the show as he explained his parenting style.

“You gotta have bachelor’s or master’s [degrees], and then if you want me to invest in one of your companies, you’re going to have to present it, boom boom boom, bring it to me,” O’Neal said of investing in his children’s ventures. “I’ll let you know, I’m not giving you nothing.”

O’Neal’s net worth is believed to be $400 million. He has a reputed 50 different endorsement deals, including Gold Bond, Reebok, Pepsi, and The General, and is a commentator on TNT’s “Inside the NBA.” There are also a lot of businesses, including Papa John’s, Big Chicken, and Shaquille’s.

Despite his long career as a basketball player, O’Neal isn’t encouraging his children to follow in his footsteps and keep the game in the family.

He said, “I don’t care if you play basketball. I don’t care about none of that,” and added: “Listen, I got six kids. I would like a doctor, somebody to own a hedge fund, a pharmacist, a lawyer, someone that owns multiple businesses, someone to take over my business. But I tell them I’m not going to hand it to you. You gotta earn it.”

In recent months, the question of celebrity money and how much inheritance celebrities should leave their children has dominated the news.

Daniel Craig also stated earlier this year that he would not be passing on his $212 million AUD fortune.

“Isn’t there an old adage that if you die a rich person, you’ve failed?” Craig remarked (reported via The Telegraph). “I think Andrew Carnegie [an American industrialist from the 1800s] gave away what in today’s money would be about $11 billion, which shows how rich he was because I’ll bet he kept some of it too.”

Craig continued: “I don’t want to leave great sums to the next generation. I think inheritance is quite distasteful. My philosophy is get rid of it or give it away before you go.”
