Chevy Chase, the slapstick comedian and former star of Saturday Night Live, has returned home after a five-week stint in the hospital. He didn’t go into detail about his stay in the hospital, but he did say it had to do with a heart problem.

These health difficulties appear to have hampered the comedian, who has stated that he has no plans to return to work immediately.

Chase chatted with Page Six to provide fans an update on his present condition, which began as follows:

“These are my first few days home. I can only say how happy I am to now be back with my family. I’m feeling good. I was in the hospital five weeks. A heart issue. So, for now, I’m around the house. Not going anywhere. I used to go out and do anything. I’d do slapstick in front of 3,000 people. But at this moment I have no need to go out and meet COVID.”

With all of this free time, the famed screenwriter has had the opportunity to catch up on the latest TV series and films, but he isn’t impressed.

Chase remarked, “I read. Turn on TV. Watch the news. All drek. I see actors, comedians, producers, screenwriters working and, God bless them, but I don’t see anything great on television. It all became a generation of s–theads laughing at the world. The humor today’s giving the next generation worse stuff than they already have in their own lives.”

“It drives me nuts,” he added.

Chevy Chase’s take on current television isn’t at all out of character for him. Regardless of his views, many fans and critics have referred to the previous two decades as peak television viewing. But Chase’s observation wasn’t entirely off the mark, since the never-ending flood of new streaming services has resulted in an oversupply of television in general. Similarly, the actor came out as disgruntled and out-of-touch, similar to a Chevy Chase character.

“First of all, between you and me and a lamppost, jeez, I don’t want to put down Lorne [Michaels] or the cast, but I’ll just say, maybe off the record, I’m amazed that Lorne has gone so low,” he told The Washington Post in 2018.

“I had to watch a little of it, and I just couldn’t f—king believe it,” he said, “That means a whole generation of s—theads laughs at the worst f—king humor in the world.”

Chevy Chase’s heart problem might be related to his diagnosis of alcohol cardiomyopathy a few years ago. Since then, he has stopped drinking, but his cardiac problems have persisted. Due to his alcoholism, he developed alcohol cardiomyopathy, which damaged his cardiac muscles. Chase opted to stop drinking due to his bad health and his family’s pleas, although it did not totally resolve his health problems.

Chase is one of the most well-known figures in American comedy, having joined the cast of Saturday Night Live in its inaugural season in 1975.

His Weekend Update section became a mainstay of the show and is still broadcast every week.

He departed the show in the midst of the second season in late 1976, but his work on the show was well-recognized, as he received three Primetime Emmy Awards out of a total of five nominations.

He most recently had a cameo appearance in Paul Hogan’s The Very Excellent Mr. Dundee, which was released in December.
