On Wednesday, Matthew McConaughey, 49, gave a touching speech at Guy Fieri’s star dedication ceremony on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, honoring his longtime friend.

The renowned chef’s family, friends and celebrity chefs, were also in attendance.

‘Fifteen or so years ago I was living in an air-stream traveling across America…I lived on the road and I came across this show Diners, Drive-Ins And Dives, and it quickly became my favorite show,’ the Dallas Buyers Club star said at the start of his speech.

“One day on the road I get the number of the host, Guy Fieri, and I call him up and I say, ‘Listen, hey man, it’s Matthew McConaughey.”

And it was via that phone conversation that a friendship was born, one that will go down in history as one of the most unexpected, but charming friendships ever. It also allowed the True Detective actor to broaden his culinary horizons. “I gotta say thank you,” he jokes, “because the Subway sandwiches, although I like them, they were getting a bit old.”

The Texan informed the audience that the man he met was far more than the host of his favorite television show.

‘This is when I met a conscientious Guy Fieri; Guy Fieri who cared about family, who cared about faith. This is when I met a guy who I could tell right away, could out-hustle a lot of people with equal talent; out-work them. This is when I met a guy who was not a food snob, and I want to give an applause to that, because that can happen, thank you for that,’ the 49-year-old said. ‘This is a guy I met who was also curious and was dealing with some newfound fame and wanted to talk about how best to navigate it.’

According to him, that’s when the bromance truly heated up.

‘We cooked a lot of food. We ate a lot of food. We drank a lot of spirits. We talked about life, and we talked about being authentic to who you are,’ said the Oscar winner.

Guy Fieri has “always remained exactly who he was,” in the nearly fifteen years since they were friends and rose up the ranks of show industry, Matthew says, which is an uncommon attribute.

He adds, “Authenticity, we talked about it the first night we met, and in a business where you can be anyone you want to be, you’ve been you the whole time, and that ain’t easy. Congratulations, and congratulations on getting your star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, brother.”

Fieri has founded more than 63 restaurants, written six cookbooks, and is the host of the Food Network’s “Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives”

Fieri is only the third chef in history to get the honor. He’ll be joined by fellow Food Network star Bobby Flay and world-famous restaurateur Wolfgang Puck.

If you can’t make it out to Los Angeles to pay respect to his new star in person, you can still find your way to Flavortown at one of Fieri’s numerous restaurants across the world, in the freezer department of your local supermarket, or wherever the open road takes you.
