Megyn Kelly was dismissed from NBC on Tuesday after making contentious remarks regarding blackface and Halloween costumes on her morning show.

“Megyn Kelly Today’ is not returning,” an NBC spokesperson said. “Next week, the 9 a.m. hour will be hosted by other TODAY co-anchors.”

Negotiations between NBC and Kelly are still underway, according to a person with intimate knowledge of the situation who spoke to NPR on Thursday. “It’s clear she will not be returning to the network,” the source stated.

Kelly argued that blackface was okay in the context of Halloween costumes when she was a youngster, claiming it was “OK when I was a kid as long as you were dressing like a character.” The backlash was quick, prompting Al Roker, a longstanding Today co-host, to say, “While she apologized to the staff, she owes a bigger apology to folks of color around the country because this is a history going back to the 1830s.”

She had also defended Luann de Lesseps, a Real Housewives of New York cast member who had darkened her complexion for a Diana Ross costume.

Kelly apologized to viewers and held a conversation with two black panelists regarding her statements on Wednesday’s broadcast.

“I want to begin with two words: I’m sorry. I defended the idea [of blackface], saying that as long it was respectful and part of a Halloween costume, that it seemed OK. Well, I was wrong, and I am sorry.”

Kelly, though, had been dropped by Creative Artists Agency by Wednesday evening (CAA). The talent agency has not offered a reason for the move, but sources speculate that a possible conflict of interest might arise if Kelly and the network clashed, as CAA also represents NBC News chief Noah Oppenheim.

Soon after, Kelly signed with a new agency, UTA, and engaged entertainment attorney Bryan Freedman.

According to Mediaite, Freedman asked that journalist Ronan Farrow attend the meeting. The request was most likely in response to Farrow’s recent claim that NBC News obstructed his investigation into Harvey Weinstein. While NBC Leader Andy Lack refuted the allegation, Kelly discussed it on her show and proposed that the network appoint a “outside investigator” to figure out what happened. Kelly’s relationship with NBC News reportedly soured soon after, according to reports.

Despite the fact that her former Fox News colleagues have voiced support for her, the network has stated that it is “very happy” with its prime-time roster and has no plans to create place for her.

Kelly, 47, joined NBC News after a decade at Fox News, lured by a $20 million-per-year salary. The first episode of “Megyn Kelly Today” aired in September 2017. Since then, her hour of the network’s tent-pole “Today” program has been tarnished by controversies, ranging from off-the-cuff outbursts to low ratings.
