A Los Angeles coroner confirmed that US rapper Mac Miller was found dead at his California residence.

The coroner’s office revealed to NPR that he was found unresponsive at his home in the Studio City neighborhood late Friday morning and was declared dead at the scene, but an autopsy was pending and an official cause of death had not yet been determined.

Miller’s family confirmed in a statement that he died on Friday, but provided no other information. “He was a bright light in this world for his family, friends and fans,” the statement read.

Miller died after an alleged drug overdose, according to celebrity news website TMZ. In media interviews and rap songs, Miller, whose actual name was Malcolm McCormick, had acknowledged his drug usage, specifically the abuse of prescribed cough syrup.

(On the song “Loud,” he said “Yeah, people lie, numbers won’t … Keep me high, drugs is close … Roll one up, pour a cup … Watch the world go up in smoke.”) The rapper was allegedly charged with DUI by the Los Angeles City Attorney’s Office this month following a May automobile accident, which occurred after his very public separation with singer Ariana Grande.

After fans blamed her for his incarceration, Grande spoke out publicly about terminating their “toxic relationship”

“I am not a babysitter or a mother and no woman should feel that they need to be,” she wrote on social media in a written statement.

Grande claimed she had “tried to support his sobriety” for years and hoped he “figures it all out.”

Grande suspended comments on her Instagram account on Friday shortly after Miller’s death.

Miller was born in the city of Pittsburgh in the state of Pennsylvania. He began his career in 2010 with Rostrum Records, a local independent label where he regularly teamed up with rapper Wiz Khalifa.

Blue Slide Park, his debut album, debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 in 2011, and was followed by Watching Movies with the Sound Off (No. 3 in 2013), GO:OD AM (No. 4 in 2015), The Divine Feminine (No. 2 in 2016), and Swimming, which debuted at No. 3 last month. He was also a talented producer under the moniker Larry Fisherman.

Chance the Rapper, J Cole, Diplo, Pusha T, Solange, the 1975, Earl Sweatshirt, Questlove, Wiz Khalifa, and Shawn Mendes are among the artists who have paid homage to the late musician, who released his most recent album, Swimming, in August to critical acclaim.

Wiz Khalifa, a rapper who grew up in Pittsburgh with Miller and knew him well, tweeted on Friday, “Praying for Mac’s family and that he rest easy.”

Missy Elliott tweeted: “I’m so saddened to hear about @MacMiller … such a kind spirit. Sending prayers for strength for his family & friends & fans during this difficult time.”

Tom Corson, co-chairman and COO of Warner Bros. Records, said, “Mac was a hugely gifted and inspiring artist, with a pioneering spirit and a sense of humor that touched everyone he met. Mac’s death is a devastating loss and cuts short a life and a talent of huge potential, where the possibilities felt limitless.”

Vulture released a feature on Mac Miller the day before his death, in which he addressed his relationship with fans and friends alike: “The people that have the best chance of knowing me, that would like to, would just be by listening to my music.”

Miller was set to begin a U.S. tour next month, and had announced it on Twitter on Thursday. He wrote, “I wish it started tomorrow.”
