President Donald Trump contradicted Arnold Schwarzenegger’s announcement that he was stepping down as host of the reality program “The Celebrity Apprentice.” He said on Saturday that Schwarzenegger was stepping down involuntarily after the show failed to attract a large audience.

Schwarzenegger said that he would have refused an invitation to return as host of the long-running NBC competition even if he had been asked, due to Trump’s ‘baggage,’ news that the President reacted to through Twitter.

Trump said that the former California governor was “fired” due to his “bad (pathetic) ratings.”

“Arnold Schwarzenegger isn’t voluntarily leaving the Apprentice, he was fired by his bad (pathetic) ratings, not by me. Sad end to great show,” Trump posted on his hyperactive Twitter account.

In response to Trump, a post on Schwarzenegger’s Twitter account said, “You should think about hiring a new joke writer and a fact checker.”

Trump has been critical of the show’s low ratings since Schwarzenegger succeeded Trump as host of the show’s 15th season, which ended in February. In contrast to the previous season hosted by Trump, the season’s ratings dropped roughly 42 percent throughout its seven-week duration.

Trump, who hosted the show for 14 seasons before leaving in 2015 to focus on his presidential campaign, is still an executive producer of the NBC network’s program.

Trump drew criticism for possible conflicts of interest when he announced that he will keep an executive producer credit on the show after winning the president in November.
