Over the weekend, Natalie Dormer revealed a nice little nugget.

The actress said she auditioned for another character on HBO’s blockbuster program at a New York Comic Con panel on Thursday afternoon.

She also stated that she did not audition for the part until Season 1 had ended. “I watched the first season and I was blown away by it…,” Dormer stated.

So why didn’t she try out for Margaery Tyrell in the first place? She was concerned that the role was too similar to Anne Boleyn, whom she had previously played on The Tudors.

Dormer says she got fascinated after a main character died.

“And then when I knew there was an audition, I auditioned for another role in ‘Game of Thrones,’ and I will never say what that is until the series is over,” Dormer stated. “So, I went in for a character that was that was not a queen that was going to get thrown in jail and I didn’t get that role. It was given to another actress.”

Ultimately, she was convinced, despite her “extreme nervousness.” However, it is the fans who have convinced her that she made the correct decision in accepting the part.

“It’s only you guys — it’s fans over the years — who have come up to me and said, ‘Don’t worry, you did all right,” she continued, noting that she recognizes the distinctions in the roles. “Now, that I look back, because I played Anne for two years and I’ve played Margaery for five, I think of Anne as fire and I think of Margaery as cool, like ice. So I’m ice and fire. See what I did there?” Dormer joked, referencing the book in the series, “A Song of Ice and Fire.”

It’s not difficult to picture Dormer in the character of Melisandre. While the two characters have separate arcs and roles to play, they have a lot in common: they’re both brilliant, crafty, and alluring ladies who can manipulate the ears and wills of Kings to achieve their objectives. Dormer could have been an excellent Melisandre, but it’s difficult to dispute that things worked out for the best. It’s impossible to picture anybody else bringing what she did to Margaery, although van Houten is also fantastic as the Red Priestess, and in the latter seasons gives the character a more worn-out quality that Dormer’s depiction lacked.
