Another one of Disney’s planned films, the animated adventure ‘Zootopia,’ has undergone a name change.
‘Tomorrowland’ is now known as ‘Tomorrowland: A World Beyond’ in the UK and other European nations, while ‘Zootropolis’ is the new name for the 2016 film that was formerly known as ‘Zootopia.’
“In the UK we decided to change the US title (Zootopia) to Zootropolis to merely allow the film to have a unique title that works for UK audiences,” a Disney official said.
The movie itself hasn’t altered. Tangled director Byron Howard directed Zootropolis, which is touted as a buddy comedy meets conspiracy thriller set in a planet populated solely by animals.
Disney has announced that the animated film would be released in theaters in the United Kingdom on March 25, 2016. It will be released in the United States on March 4, 2016.
“Usually in animal movies, people just make them all human and give them human abilities,” Howard remarked in 2013 at Disney’s D23 event, “but we wanted to bring the animal abilities into the movie. In the same way we pushed human animation in Tangled, we want to show an animal movie the way no one has seen before. Animals in our world are beautiful and amazing and we wanted to capture that and tie it to what we are as humans.”
There has been very little information released about the project thus far, and no voice cast has been disclosed as of this writing. It’s billed as an action-adventure film that follows the escapades of a fast-talking fox who goes on the run after being falsely accused of a crime he didn’t commit, so it at least has an intriguing concept.
Disney will be attempting to repeat the success of its last two films, Frozen, which grossed more than $1.27 billion worldwide after its November 2013 release, and Big Hero 6, which grossed more than $600 million since its November 2014 release.
Another Disney project, Moana will be released in the United States on November 23, 2019, with a UK release date of December 26 on the IMDb, however this has yet to be confirmed.
The film is characterized as a “mythic adventure set around 2,000 years ago and across a series of islands in the South Pacific”.
It will follow Moana Waialiki, an adolescent sea-voyaging enthusiast and the sole daughter of a chief in a long line of navigators, as she embarks on an epic quest to discover a mythical island, teaming up with demigod Maui and meeting marine animals, underworlds, and spirits from Polynesian mythology.
