Conan O’Brien crashed Stephen Colbert’s Emmy winning speech on Sunday night.

Stephen Colbert won the Emmy for Outstanding Variety Special, Live, but that didn’t stop Conan O’Brien from joining the celebration on stage. As presenter Aidy Bryant announced them as category winners, Colbert and his team ascended the stage, but O’Brien was already there, raising his arms in delight.

When Colbert spotted O’Brien onstage with “Late Show” workers, he laughed.

“Thank you. Wow, I haven’t met some of these people before,” Colbert said on stage. “I accept this Emmy on behalf of everybody who works on The Late Show with pride and I am so proud to be one of them. And I’m so glad that we got honored for a live show because there are many nights when we do this show when we say ‘this is like a live show,’ especially when something would happen at four o’clock, or five o’clock or 5:15 and we had to go on at 5:30 and write a whole new show in 20 minutes.”

“Most of the people behind me really deserve this Emmy right now,” Colbert remarked in his victory speech, jabbing O’Brien.

While some fans were perplexed by O’Brien’s appearance, many others were enthusiastic about the situation.

It’s worth noting that this wasn’t the first time O’Brien was blamed for causing havoc on the night of the 73rd Primetime Emmy Awards. Earlier in the program, he interrupted Frank Scherma, the Television Awards’ CEO, by starting to applaud and yell loudly, thus diverting the audience’s attention to his amusing outburst. As he accepted the award for Outstanding Variety Talk Series, John Oliver gave him a shout-out.

“Thank you so much. Like many in this room, I was kind of rooting for Conan [O’Brien], so this is bittersweet,” Oliver said.

Backstage, Colbert told the on-the-spot reporters, “I said why don’t you come on stage with us if we win…we love Conan. We’re honored to be superfans of Conan O’Brien.”

O’Brien’s behavior was inevitably a topic of discussion backstage. Colbert and Oliver joined in, with the latter having this to say about Conan’s award: “He can take it from my cold, dead hands! I realize I said I appreciated him, but not that much.”
