Amber Tamblyn, a 34-year-old actress, has accused James Woods of trying to pick her up when she was underage.
Tamblyn responded to an insult Woods hurled at Armie Hammer’s new movie, Call Me By Your Name, earlier in the day.
Woods had criticized the age gap between Hammer’s 24-year-old character and his on-screen 17-year-old boyfriend, saying that it was chipping away at decency.
“James Woods tried to pick me and my friend up at a restaurant once,” Tamblyn wrote on Twitter Monday.
“He wanted to take us to Vegas. ‘I’m 16’ I said. ‘Even better’ he said.”
Woods later tweeted that Tamblyn was lying after responding to a Twitter user who questioned if he was in a position to criticize the age difference between Hammond’s 24-year-old character and his on-screen 17-year-old boyfriend.
“The first is illegal. The second is a lie,” Woods responded.
Hammer quickly responded, calling out the actor for dating 19-year-old Ashley Madison when Woods was 59 for more than six years starting in 2007.
He later broke up with Madison and started dating 20-year-old Kristen Bauguess in 2013 when he was 66.
Tamblyn continued to discuss her experience with Woods, writing, “He tried to pick me and a friend up when we were 16.”
She added, “I don’t necessarily think of this as sexual harassment, though I don’t know what else you’d call it.”
Call Me By Your Name has been earning rave reviews and Oscar buzz at the Toronto International Film Festival over the weekend.
Hammer admitted at a Q&A after a screening at the festival that he took on the role of the grad student who falls in love with his professor’s son because it made brought him out of his comfort zone.
“To be perfectly honest, I think the reason I took this movie, and the reason I had to take this movie, is that it scared me,” he said.
“It made me uncomfortable, it challenged me, and it pushed me. I couldn’t be more thankful for the experience.”
Woods had earlier tweeted that the age gap between Hammer’s character and his on-screen boyfriend was “NAMBLA,” an acronym for the North American Man/Boy Love Association, a pedophilia advocacy organization.
Many social media users were outraged by Woods’ comments. “James Woods tried to pick up a 16 year old at a restaurant,” wrote one user. “
He called a gay relationship with an age gap pedophilia. I can’t imagine the mental gymnastics required to defend him at this point.”
Others praised Tamblyn for speaking out against Woods. “Thank you for sharing that story,” wrote one user. “James Woods’ behavior is disgusting.”
This isn’t the first time Woods has been criticized for his comments on social media.
Earlier this year, he tweeted that transgender children were being used as “weapons of mass destruction” against traditional values.
Despite the backlash, Woods has remained unapologetic. “I’m OK being known as someone who spoke out against the sexualization of young boys,” he tweeted.
“If you’re OK with it, that says more about you than me.”
