Actress Catherine Zeta-Jones checked into a mental health facility for treatment of her bipolar disorder, according to her representative.
The actress recently supported her husband, Michael Douglas, during his successful cancer treatment.
The representative stated that “after dealing with the stress of the past year, Catherine made the decision to check into a mental health facility for a brief stay to treat her Bipolar II Disorder.
She’s feeling great and looking forward to starting work this week on her two upcoming films.”
People magazine reported that the actress spent approximately five days at the facility.
A friend of the actress told the magazine that Zeta-Jones was about to start work on a movie and wanted to ensure that she was fully prepared for it.
The friend stated, “There’s no question it’s been a stressful year.
“Catherine has had to deal with Michael’s illness and that’s been hard.
“She went in for a few days because she’s about to start working, and wanted to make sure she’s in top form, which she is.”
Zeta-Jones is set to star in the movies “The Godmother” and “Prodigal Son,” both currently in pre-production.
The actress has been open about her struggles with bipolar disorder in the past, revealing in 2011 that she had been diagnosed with the condition.
The actress has had a trying year, supporting her husband during his cancer treatment and dealing with other family issues.
Douglas, 66, has been declared cancer-free by doctors after six months of chemotherapy and radiation for throat cancer.
Zeta-Jones and Douglas have also been dealing with Douglas’ son Cameron’s prison sentence and his ex-wife Diandra Douglas’ claim that she is entitled to half of his earnings from “Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps.”
Adding to her stress, Zeta-Jones recently lost her composure when she was swarmed by paparazzi in London.
After attending a ceremony honoring her film and charitable work, the actress was punched by an aggressive photographer.
Bipolar disorder is a mental health condition that affects approximately 2.8% of adults in the United States.
The disorder causes shifts in mood, energy, and activity levels, and can make it difficult to carry out day-to-day tasks.
Zeta-Jones has been an advocate for mental health awareness and has spoken openly about her struggles with bipolar disorder.
In a 2018 interview with Good Morning America, the actress said, “The smartest thing I did was to seek help when I needed it.
“My husband was so supportive. He said, ‘We’re going to get through this, and we’ll be stronger for it.'”
The actress has also been vocal about the stigma surrounding mental health conditions.
In a 2019 interview with Town & Country, she said, “It’s not easy. I’m not the kind of person who likes to shout out my personal issues from the rooftops, but with my bipolar becoming public, I hope fellow sufferers will know it is completely controllable.
“I hope I can help remove any stigma attached to it, and that those who don’t have it under control will seek help with all that is available to treat it.”
