Ethan Hawke and Uma Thurman were once a prominent Hollywood couple, known for their roles in popular films of the 1990s.

The pair met on the set of their sci-fi thriller Gattaca in 1996 and married two years later in 1998. They welcomed their daughter, Maya, that same year, and their son, Levon, in 2002.

However, their marriage ended in 2003 amid rumors that Hawke had cheated on Thurman with their children’s nanny, Ryan Shawhughes.

Hawke denied the allegations, but after finalizing his divorce with Thurman in 2005, he began dating Shawhughes publicly.

In January 2008, his rep confirmed that the couple was “thrilled” to be expecting their first baby together. And in July of that same year, Hawke and Shawhughes were secretly married.

“They were married last month in New York City,” his rep Mara Buxbaum told People at the time. “No further details are available.”

Hawke denied the allegations, but in a 2012 interview with The Guardian, he admitted that his marriage fell apart due to other pressures.

He even compared his situation to that of the character Captain von Trapp in The Sound of Music, who falls in love with his children’s governess.

“I know people imagine some kind of Sound Of Music type love affair, but the truth is by the time Ryan and I were falling in love, it had been a long while since I had employed her,” Hawke said.

In a separate interview with Elle in 2013, Hawke admitted that he was too young and immature to get married at the age of 27.

“Success when you’re young is really overwhelming. The world felt out of control. And I wanted to stop it from spinning so fast. I thought marriage would decrease my variables or something. I was absolutely wrong,” he said.

Thurman has been open about the difficulties of her marriage breakdown and the impact it had on her family.

In an interview with Oprah Winfrey, she said, “It’s extremely hard, and it’s hard on the whole family. You’re a family, and then you’re not a family in the same way. Our marriage failed. I should take full responsibility for the failure of my own marriage. Blaming anybody doesn’t make you feel any better.”

She added, “It’s excruciating, it’s weird because you know you have a nice boyfriend and then husband, and the children are doing OK and work’s OK. Then suddenly you cross these little ceremonies where it’s all this, this is like a blizzard again… and you can’t believe that you’re feeling what you are feeling, and you are still so far from your life feeling whole again.”

This was Thurman’s second divorce. She was previously married to actor Gary Oldman from 1990 to 1992.

Hawke has been married twice since his divorce from Thurman, first to Ryan Shawhughes and then to Alexandra Lenas. He has four children in total, two with each of his ex-wives.

In a 2012 interview with The Guardian, Hawke said that he was enjoying fatherhood more the second time around.

“I’m really the right age now. I like being home. When Maya [his eldest child] was born, I was 27. It was three years after Reality Bites came out. I look at pictures of myself and wonder: ‘What was I thinking? What was he thinking?'” he said.

“I think I thought when I was younger that I would, like, get things and then it would all be easy. You’d be able to walk whatever road you wanted and then sadly you would start having arthritis, but by then you’d have kids and everything would be fine. I didn’t really understand what a meandering road adulthood is.”

Since going public with their relationship more than 10 years ago, Hawke and Shawhughes have kept a relatively low profile in Brooklyn, New York, where they live with their two daughters.

Shawhughes, who now goes by the name Ryan Hawke, has also worked as a producer on several of her husband’s films, including First Reformed (2018) and Blaze (2018).

Maya, now 24, has followed in her parents’ footsteps and pursued a career in acting. She made her debut in the 2018 film Ladyworld and has since appeared in several other projects. She has also released music, including the aforementioned song “Driver” and the EP “The Lets Go.”

Hawke has starred in numerous critically acclaimed films, such as Training Day, Boyhood, and First Reformed. Thurman has also continued to act, appearing in Kill Bill, Batman & Robin, and The Producers.
