When Prince Harry lived in the United Kingdom, he was known to sneak into the stands of a British rugby match or two each season. It appears that the Duke of Sussex is adopting the same for America’s national sport.
The Duke of Sussex was sighted in the stands at SoFi Stadium in California on Sunday, accompanying his cousin Princess Eugenie, for the Super Bowl LVI matchup between the Los Angeles Rams and Cincinnati Bengals.
Eugenie is the first royal to pay Harry and Meghan Markle a public visit since they departed the United Kingdom in March 2020.
Eugenie Brooksbank, 31, resides in Windsor, England, with her husband, Jack Brooksbank, and their one-year-old son, August.
Harry dressed casually for the event, with images showing him wearing a white T-shirt, black jeans, and a black jacket. Eugenie wore jeans, a baseball cap, and a jacket of her own design. Black face masks rounded off their ensembles.
Eugenie and Harry watched the game from a suite sponsored by Salesforce and danced in their seats during the halftime show, which included Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, Mary J. Blige, Kendrick Lamar, and Eminem. The cousins’ appearance remained undetected until the NFL’s U.K. account posted a photo of the pair in the stands wearing two black KN-95 masks.
Backstage, Harry even spent some time meeting new acquaintances in one of the stadium’s many VIP zones. Mickey Guyton, a country music artist who performed a passionate rendition of the national anthem before kickoff, said on Twitter that she had a very casual interaction with the Duke of Sussex. She wrote, “He was just lovely. I even curtsied in my track suit.”
Harry and Eugenie, who are close friends, watched the game without their spouses.
Harry, 37, and Eugenie, 31, have been close for a long time. Eugenie wrote a poignant note to Meghan and Harry after the birth of their baby, Lilibet, in June.
“Congratulations dear cousins.. we couldn’t be happier for you all,” Eugenie captioned a black-and-white portrait of the newlyweds on her Instagram Story.
Meghan earlier told Oprah Winfrey during the couple’s interview, “Eugenie and I had known each other before I had known Harry, so that was comfortable. We’re friends with them as a couple.”
Just after Eugenie and Jack’s son August was born, Meghan and Harry revealed they were expecting Lili.
At the time, a royal insider told PEOPLE, “These times tend to bring families together. What is lovely is Eugenie having her baby as Harry and Meghan are having theirs. They are very close.”
