Michael K. Williams, well known for his portrayal of Omar Little on HBO’s “The Wire,” has passed away.

Michael K. Williams, 54, was discovered by a family member, according to police.

According to reports, he was found face-down and unconscious in the dining room of his posh Williamsburg home, with what seemed to be heroin on the kitchen table.

According to another law enforcement official who talked to CNN, the investigation is still underway.

A spokeswoman for the city’s chief medical examiner said, “The cause and manner of death are pending further studies following the examination.”

“Our family has been shaken to the core of the loss of our Mike. Thank you to everyone who contacted us, flooded us with love, and more importantly, prayers. I will miss my brother, my best friend and birthday partner in this realm, but I know he will continue to watch over me and our family in heaven as he did on earth,” Michelle Chambers, Williams’ sister, said in a statement Tuesday.

Fans, co-stars, and especially his close family were shocked by his passing.

“He was loved,” nephew Arvance Williams said. “Always smiling, always happy, always dancing.”

Williams was due to attend a function Saturday but never showed up, according to reports. A cousin of the Emmy-winning actor spoke with him on Friday.

Williams was candid about his drug addiction, describing it as a daily struggle.

“A lot of people think that when a person puts down the drugs or the alcohol that all the problems go away,” he once said. “That couldn’t be further from the truth. Drugs and alcohol are not the problem. They are merely symptoms of the problem.”

“It is with deep sorrow that the family announces the passing of Emmy nominated actor Michael Kenneth Williams. They ask for your privacy while grieving this unsurmountable loss,” a representative for Williams’ family said.

In 2016, the actor told NPR that he had walked into a New Jersey church, begging for assistance for his addiction.

“When I came through those doors, I was broken. … This was, I would say, around the … third season of ‘The Wire,’” Williams said.

Williams played Leonard on the SundanceTV crime series “Hap and Leonard” and had a recurring role on J.J. Abrams’ “Alias.” Williams was a regular on many acclaimed HBO series, including “The Wire,” “Boardwalk Empire,” and “The Night Of.”  In addition, he appeared in critically praised films such as “Inherent Vice,” “12 Years a Slave,” “Gone Baby Gone,” and “The Road.”

Williams, who grew up in Brooklyn, has recently starred in HBO’s “Lovecraft Country” and the series “F Is for Family.”

In “The Wire,” his openly homosexual character carried a sawed-off shotgun while robbing drug dealers on the rough streets of Baltimore while humming Elmer Fudd’s “A-Hunting We Will Go.”

The actor’s performance earned him three Emmy nominations for outstanding supporting actor in a limited series or film for his roles in “When They See Us,” “The Night Of,” and “Bessie.” For his role on “Lovecraft Country,” he is nominated for an Emmy for outstanding supporting actor in a drama series.

As word of Williams’ death spread, people began to react on social media.

“Michael K Williams was a beautiful, passionate, expansive soul. I felt so lucky to have known him, and we were all so fortunate to have enjoyed his incredible talent,” Aisha Tyler wrote on Twitter. “He burned so very bright.”

James Gunn, the director, added: “Michael K Williams, in addition to being one of the most talented actors around, was also one of the kindest, sweetest, most gentle souls I’ve ever met. This is heartbreaking. My thoughts are with all those who loved him.”

“Shocked and saddened by the death of Michael K Williams. One of the nicest brothers on the planet with the biggest heart. An amazing actor and soul. May you RIP. God bless.” Isiah Whitlock Jr wrote twitter.

“We are devastated to learn of the passing of Michael Kenneth Williams, a member of the HBO family for more than 20 years. While the world is aware of his immense talents as an artist, we knew Michael as a dear friend who was beloved by all who had the privilege to work with him. We send our deepest condolences to his family for this immeasurable loss,” HBO said in a statement.

Williams, who was born in Brooklyn in November 1966, began his career as a professional dancer at the age of 22 and has performed in over 50 music videos, according to TV Guide.

In 2012, President Barack Obama remarked that Williams’ depiction of Omar on “The Wire,” was his favorite character on the show, adding, “That guy is unbelievable.”
