Margaret Qualley, who was dating Shia LaBeouf at the time FKA twigs accused him of abuse, has come out in support of the singer. On Tuesday, September 28, Qualley, 26, told Harper’s Bazaar, “It was important to me for her to know that I believe her — and it’s as simple as that.”

When asked about her preparation for her character in Netflix’s Maid, Qualley said, “Unfortunately, it’s so common,” adding, “And it’s true that more than half of people experience some level of psychological threat within a relationship in their lifetime. I just did my best to read the script and experience Alex’s reality as much as possible within the scenes.”

According to the New York Times, Qualley dated LaBeouf while filming “Maid” and broke up with him weeks after Twigs, 33, filed a complaint against him for sexual violence, assault, and infliction of emotional distress.

In response to Twigs’ complaint, LaBeouf refuted Twigs’ allegations “generally and specifically.” While “many of these allegations are not true,” LaBeouf noted in an email to the New York Times at the time of the lawsuit that he owed Twigs and the ladies “the opportunity to air their statements publicly and accept accountability for those things I have done.”

“I’m not in any position to tell anyone how my behavior made them feel. I have no excuses for my alcoholism or aggression, only rationalizations. I have been abusive to myself and everyone around me for years,” he explained. “I have a history of hurting the people closest to me. I’m ashamed of that history and am sorry to those I hurt. There is nothing else I can really say.”

Qualley made her first public show of support for Twigs shortly after their breakup, uploading a photo of the singer on the cover of Elle magazine, in which the “Cellophane” singer accused LaBeouf of “systematic” abuse.

Qualley had captioned the photo, “Thank you,”

When asked why she posted the photo, Qualley told Harper’s Bazaar it was to prove she supported Twigs’ allegations against their ex.

“It was important to me for her to know that I believe her—and it’s as simple as that,” Qualley told Harper’s Bazaar, adding that she didn’t want to talk about her personal life but expected queries about her connection with LaBeouf because of her Maid character.

Qualley and LaBeouf were first photographed together at LAX in December 2020.

Twigs discussed why she decided to go public with her experience in an ELLE cover story. “It’s hard to do this publicly… but I want people to know my story,” she said. “If I can’t help people through my experience, it makes my experience 10 times worse. There has to be a point to this—a reason why this happened to me. It’s not just about my [personal] recovery.”

Twigs has moved on from Qualley, who was recently seen making out with Jack Antonoff in New York, while Qualley has moved on from The 1975’s Matty Healy.
