The first teaser for Spider-Man: No Way Home was unveiled to a gathering of theater owners in Las Vegas on Monday night, helping to kick off this year’s slimmed-down CinemaCon. This year’s conference, with fewer attendees and a more restrained tone, comes at a time when cinemas are facing unprecedented problems. The Spider-Man teaser also arrives under unique circumstances, since a version of the No Way Home clip leaked online the day before, prompting Sony to issue take-down warnings.

Tom Rothman, the CEO of Sony Motion Pictures Group, unveiled the trailer, which included comments from Tom Holland and Benedict Cumberbatch. In this film, Peter Parker confronts his most ruthless adversary to date: the past. The teaser reveals the multiverse narrative of “No Way Home,” which will bring Holland together with villains from prior Spider-Man films after nearly a year of conjecture.

Before being taken down, the weekend “No Way Home” leak garnered so much intense internet interest that it became a trending topic on Twitter. “shout-out to the real ones who are watching the trailer for the first time right now,” the official Twitter account for the film wrote on Monday.

Watts also poked fun at the leak on social media, sharing a “Inception”-style video of the teaser with the tagline, “The way the director intended.”

Alfred Molina, who portrayed Doctor Octopus in Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man 2, appears in the video, and Jamie Foxx, who played Electro in Andrew Garfield’s The Amazing Spider-Man 2, is also on the cast list for Marvel Studios’ upcoming Spider-Man film. Jon Watts is the director.

Molina told Variety earlier this year that his tale will begin off precisely where “Spider-Man 2” leaves off, with Doc Ock sinking in the East River with his unstable nuclear reactor to rescue the city.

“For the record, I never wanted to lie to you,” Holland tells costar Zendaya in the trailer. “But how do you tell somebody you are Spider-Man?”

Parker appears in the trailer after the events of “Spider-Man: Far From Home” which was released in 2019. The student/superhero lives in a chaotic environment where the villain Mysterio (Jake Gyllenhaal) has disclosed his secret identity to everyone, including his lover MJ (Zendaya).

Parker rushes to Doctor Strange (Cumberbatch) for a supernatural answer, hoping to find a spell that would reverse the major disclosure and restore the status quo. The power released plunges Parker and Strange into the multiverse and unfathomable danger, thanks to some dependable teen awkwardness.

Doctor Strange says ominously, “We tampered with the stability of space-time. The multi-verse is a concept about which we know frighteningly little.”

No Way Home is probably the most significant movie on Sony’s slate, with fans screaming online for months for news on the Marvel Studios sequel, which has been compared to Disney’s Avengers films. Spider-Man: Far From Home, the preceding chapter, is Sony’s highest-grossing picture ever, collecting $1.132 billion worldwide.

This year’s CinemaCon takes place as theater owners worry about streaming services, shrinking theatrical windows, and the ongoing coronavirus outbreak. Sony officials stated repeatedly during the presentation that the company was devoted to the theatrical experience. Rothman mentioned that he recently saw 20th Century’s Free Guy, which has done well since its debut two weeks ago.
