According to a source, Kate Middleton and Meghan Markle’s friendship has improved more than a year after the Duchess of Sussex and her husband, Prince Harry, retired from royal responsibilities.

A source tells Us Weekly that “Meghan and Kate are actually getting along really well and have been in touch more often. Meghan and Kate’s relationship was never that close. And now they’re closer than ever and working on their relationship for the sake of the family.”

After Meghan and her husband, Prince Harry, delivered an explosive CBS interview in March, the Bench author, 40, and the Duchess of Cambridge, 39, have had a tumultuous relationship over the last year.

The pair discussed their transfer from the United Kingdom to the United States, as well as their reasons for standing down as royals and quitting the royal family, in the interview. Meghan said in the interview that Kate made her cry only days before her May 2018 wedding to Harry. According to initial accounts, it was the other way around, with the former Suits actress allegedly leaving Kate in tears following an altercation.

Markle remarked, “The narrative with Kate, it didn’t happen. A few days before the wedding she was upset about flower girl dresses and it made me cry. It really hurt my feelings.”

Kate, who shares Prince George, 8, Princess Charlotte, 6, and Prince Louis, 3, with Prince William, worked it out with her following the misunderstanding, according to the Duchess of Sussex.

“It was a really hard week of the wedding. And she was upset about something, but she owned it, and she apologized. And she brought me flowers and a note, apologizing,” Meghan said

“So much of what I have seen play out is this idea of polarity,” Markle said in the interview. “If you love me, you don’t have to hate her. And if you love her, you don’t need to hate me.”

The women hadn’t talked in a year, according to a source who spoke to Us after the interview aired. Harry’s continuing feud with his brother, William, 39, contributed to the animosity between them.

“There is real animosity that the brothers have toward one another, and that has spilled over to Meghan and Kate’s relationship, making it very hard for them to be friends or even friendly,” a source told the publication in March.

An unidentified insider told Us Weekly that months after her and Prince Harry’s much-discussed conversation with Winfrey, the two duchesses had made peace and put the bridesmaid dress incident behind them.

“It’s wasted energy,” the insider said in July. “They’ve called a truce.”

The duchesses have reportedly been in contact since Meghan and Harry’s baby, Lilibet, was born.

“They’re in a better place and have exchanged texts since the birth of Lilibet,” the insider told Us at the time. “They’ve bonded over both having daughters and can’t wait for all the cousins to meet.”

A second source added, “Kate has been reaching out to Meghan a lot more since [Lili] was born, she’s sending [notes and] gifts and trying to build up a relationship.”
