Debra Winger has explained why Geena Davis took over her place in the 1992 film “A League of Their Own.”

The Oscar-nominated actress, 66, told The Telegraph that she dropped out of the 1992 Penny Marshall picture after Madonna was chosen as one of the ensemble’s athletes. Winger expressed her concern that it was turning into an “Elvis film,” rather than the project for which she spent three months intensively practicing with the Chicago Cubs baseball club.

“The studio agreed with me because it was the only time I ever collected a pay-or-play on my contract. In other words, I collected my pay even though I did not play, and that’s very hard to get in a court,” she recently told the Telegraph.

The three-time Oscar nominee then went on to criticize the film, claiming that it didn’t do enough to highlight the experiences of real-life sportsmen.

“I think [her] acting career has spoken for itself,” Debra said when questioned about Madonna’s performance. Ouch.

She went on to say, “As entertaining as [the final film] was, you don’t walk away going ‘Wow, those women did that. ‘ You kind of go ‘Is that true?'”

She also stated that she believes most of the actors did not have adequate preparation and that Geena “did OK” in the role Debra was supposed to portray.

Winger has received three Academy Award nominations for her roles in the films An Officer and a Gentleman (1982), Terms of Endearment (1983), and Shadowlands (1985). (1993). She is presently appearing alongside Joseph Gordon-Levitt in the Apple TV+ series Mr. Corman.

Winger also discussed her decision to leave Hollywood in 1995.

“I stopped because I ceased being challenged,” she said, adding that playing the supportive wife and mother got “pretty boring.”

Amazon Studios and Sony Pictures Television revealed last year that A League of Their Own will be getting a TV revival. Abbi Jacobson (Broad City) will star and executive produce. Rosie O’Donnell, who starred in the original film, will reprise her role in the remake.

The remake aims to capture the “joyful spirit of Penny Marshall’s beloved classic, while widening the lens to tell the story of an entire generation of women who dreamed of playing professional baseball.”

The series, which was co-created by Jacobson and Will Graham, attempts to examine race and sexuality by following a fresh cast of characters as they cut their own pathways to the baseball field, both in and out of the league. Rosie O’Donnell, who starred in the original film, will reprise her role in the remake.
