After seven years of marriage, Kim Kardashian filed for divorce from musician Kanye West, citing “irreconcilable differences.”

Kim, 40, and rapper Kanye, 43, have been the subject of much speculation in recent months that they were about to divorce, with Kim submitting the papers earlier this month.

One source said, “Kim filing for divorce from Kanye is just a formal part of the process,” “The couple has been done for a while and have been amicable for a while. At the end of the day, Kanye and Kim love each other immensely, but knew it was time to call it quits. Their children are their number one priority and no matter what will maintain a positive relationship for them.”

Kim is also ready to move forward, according to a source who spoke to ET recently.

“Kim feels like she can put that part behind her and start to move forward in healing,” the source said. “She knows she will be OK. It’s just going to take some time to get used to her new normal.”

Kim Kardashian has requested shared legal and physical custody of the couple’s four children, including girls North, seven, and Chicago, three, and boys Saint, five, and Psalm, one, according to court papers.

Laura Wasser, a celebrity divorce lawyer, has been hired to represent her.

When it comes to separating property, the documents mention a prenuptial agreement Kim and Kanye have in place.

Kardashian, 40, and West, 43, have reportedly started working on a property settlement deal, according to TMZ, which cited insiders who characterized the divorce process as “amicable.”

Coming to a reasonable and fair custody arrangement may be the simplest aspect of this divorce; the (re)allocation of the couple’s joint and individual assets, however, may prove more challenging. Both Kim and Kanye are now billionaires, with much of their fortune amassed during their nearly seven-year marriage. Finding out who gets what (including their $40 million Calabasas mansion) in their divorce may transform a “amicable” split into a nasty one, according to insiders. Kanye has been outspoken in the past about his desire to keep control of what he owns, so any discussion about sharing his money with him may possibly sour the amicable separation.

They haven’t spent time together as a married couple in months,’ says the source.  ‘They’ve seen each other for the sake of the kids but have been living separately. Kim knows the marriage is over. She’s known for a while.’

Kardashian started seeing West in 2012, while still legally married to Kris Humphries, a professional basketball player.

Since Kanye’s unsuccessful presidential campaign, in which he broke down on stage and revealed that he and Kim contemplated aborting their oldest child North, Kim and Kanye’s marriage has been the subject of intense scrutiny.

He went on a Twitter rant shortly after the event, accusing his wife of attempting to have him “locked up” by physicians and revealing that he had previously sought a divorce.

Kim is believed to be based in Los Angeles, whereas Kanye is said to be based in Wyoming.

Next month will see the premiere of the 20th and last season of Keeping Up with the Kardashians, the reality show that made Kim famous. It’s unknown whether the series will go into further depth about the divorce.

As the divorce proceedings progress, Kanye has been offline, while Kim has remained active on social media, posting adorable pictures of her family and hinting at what her life as a single mother of four could be like. On KUWTK, we won’t get to see what that new life looks like — maybe the SKIMS creator will give us a clue as to what she’s working on for Hulu — but the E! program will at least explain how she and Kanye arrived to where they are now.

Kim is reported to be “disappointed” that she was unable to make her marriage to Kanye work.
