Prince Harry threatens to sue BBC Over Lilibet Name Report

Prince Harry has vowed to sue the BBC after it claimed that he and Meghan Markle “never asked” the queen for permission to name their baby daughter Lilibet, after her childhood nickname.

He ordered that the corporation stop repeating the accusation in a legal letter sent yesterday. The report is “false and defamatory” according to the couple’s lawyers, Schillings.

A BBC report by royal writer Jonny Dymond, said that the Queen was not asked by the duke and duchess about the name of their daughter, who was born on Friday, citing a palace source.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex had previously informed the BBC via close sources that Harry, 36, did, in fact, talk with the Queen and “would have mentioned the name” to his grandmother.

The Sussexes’ spokesperson said shortly after the story that they would not have used the name if the Queen had not been supportive.

He said: “The duke spoke with his family in advance of the announcement — in fact his grandmother was the first family member he called. During that conversation, he shared their hope of naming their daughter Lilibet in her honour. Had she not been supportive, they would not have used the name.”

The Queen’s nickname, Lilibet, was given to Harry and Meghan’s daughter, who was born on June 4th. According to some experts and stories, the Queen did not give them permission to use the name.

The Queen’s childhood nickname, Lilibet, stuck after her grandpa, King George V, imitated her efforts to pronounce “Elizabeth.”

According to Dymond’s account, Her Majesty was “never asked” about the name’s use. The material in the piece refuted rumours that Prince Harry and Meghan had talked to the Queen before the birth, which surfaced in the aftermath of the name announcement.

Omid Scobie, Meghan’s close associate also tweeted, “Those close to Prince Harry confirm that he spoke to close family before the announcement so perhaps this report highlights just how far removed aides within the institution (who learned of the baby news alongside the rest of the world) now are from the Sussexes’ private matters.”

The Queen was “delighted” at the baby news in a congratulatory message.

The Queen is also said to have invited Prince Harry to lunch on his visit to the UK next month to unveil a statue of Princess Diana, making it seem unlikely that the monarch and her grandson are at odds over the baby’s name.
