Meghan Markle and Prince Harry welcomed their second child on June 4, 2021.

The couple named the infant daughter after two key ladies in his life.

They announced the birth of their second child, Lilibet Diana Mountbatten-Windsor, on Sunday. They plan to use the nickname “Lili.”

“It is with great joy that Prince Harry and Meghan, The Duke and Duchess of Sussex, welcome their daughter, Lilibet ‘Lili’ Diana Mountbatten-Windsor, to the world. Lili was born on Friday, June 4 at 11:40 a.m. in the trusted care of the doctors and staff at Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital in Santa Barbara, CA,” the couple shared in an announcement. “She weighed 7 lbs 11 oz. Both mother and child are healthy and well, and settling in at home.”

Lilibet also means “God’s promise.”

Lili is named after her great-grandmother, Her Majesty The Queen, whose family nickname is Lilibet, according to a family statement.

“Her middle name, Diana, was chosen to honour her beloved late grandmother, The Princess of Wales.”

Queen Elizabeth was called “Lilibet” by Prince Philip, which was also her childhood nickname.

As a child, the monarch’s family members lovingly referred to her as Lilibet. The Queen placed a handwritten message on top of Prince Philip’s coffin as a heartfelt gesture to her husband of 73 years, who died in April. The monarch signed the note from “Lilibet.”  Philip was believed to be the Queen’s last person to address her by that name.

It was also a nickname given to the Queen by her father, King George VI, who famously declared of his two daughters, “Lilibet is my pride. Margaret is my joy.”

“This is the second child for the couple, who also have a two-year-old son named Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor,” the birth announcement said. “The Duke and Duchess thank you for your warm wishes and prayers as they enjoy this special time as a family.”

During her candid interview with Oprah Winfrey in March, Meghan announced she was expecting a baby girl.

When Oprah asked Harry how he felt when they found out his second kid would be a girl, he said, “Amazing. Just grateful, like—to have any child, any one or any two would have been amazing, but to have a boy and then a girl, what more can you ask for?”

The Queen’s grandson added: “Now we’ve got our family. We’ve got the four of us and our two dogs and it’s great.”

When Prince William and Kate Middleton named their baby Princess Charlotte, they also paid tribute to the Queen and Princess Diana. Princess Charlotte Elizabeth Diana is the full name of the 6-year-old princess.

Meghan wrote an emotional note on Lilibet’s birth on their Archewell website, adding, “On June 4th, we were blessed with the arrival of our daughter, Lili.

“She is more than we could have ever imagined, and we remain grateful for the love and prayers we’ve felt from across the globe.

“Thank you for your continued kindness and support during this very special time for our family.”
