Kim Kardashian has filed for divorce from rapper Kanye West after nearly seven years of marriage, bringing to an end one of the world’s most recognizable entertainment couple, with a social media following in the hundreds of millions and a variety of political and big-business initiatives.

Christy Welder, a spokesperson, did not comment on the filing, which would dissolve the Kimye union. Mr. West, 43, and Ms. Kardashian West, 40, have four children: North, Saint, Chicago, and Psalm.

The reason for the divorce was not immediately clear.

According to TMZ, the divorce is “amicable,” with Kardashian requesting shared legal and physical custody of the couple’s four children, which West is “fine” with.

The marriage’s demise follows the September news that the program that established her family’s fame, “Keeping Up With The Kardashians,” will conclude after 14 years in 2021.

The couple, who began dating in 2012 and married two years later in a grandiose wedding in Italy, quickly became one of the world’s most recognizable couples.

West, 43, has spoken up about his bipolar disorder difficulties.

In July of last year, the erratic Hollywood magnate announced his candidacy for the presidency of the United States in a meandering address in which he disclosed he wanted to abort his daughter and broke down in tears.

Their turbulent marriage was relentlessly covered by the media, served as inspiration for infrequent episodes of her long-running reality program, “Keeping Up With the Kardashians,” and was documented for millions on their Instagram and Twitter accounts.

According to the US entertainment news site, the couple had a prenuptial agreement in place, with conversations on property settlements thought to be in the early stages.

It comes after months of rumors that the couple’s marriage was failing, with various sources informing US media that their “divorce is imminent” and Kardashian hiring famous divorce lawyer Laura Wasser.

Both Kardashian and West have parlayed their early fame – his as a sought-after hip-hop producer and the rapper behind “Stronger” and “Gold Digger,” hers as a reality TV star on par with a movie star – into larger undertakings, amassing significant fortune.

West’s Yeezy design brand, with its high-end apparel and sought-after Adidas sneakers, has become an extension of his life and identity, as well as his music. Kardashian evolved from renowned socialite to huge entrepreneur, with her brand on mobile applications and games, as well as cosmetic items and clothing.

Kardashian and West are both said to be billionaires. West made a fortune through his music as well as his Yeezy clothing and footwear company.

Kardashian, who is pursuing a career as a social justice lawyer, gained her fortune through her TV shows, as a social media influencer, and by building successful fashion and cosmetic brands.

She also became involved in the criminal justice reform movement. After Ms. Kardashian West visited Mr. Trump at the White House and helped bring her case to his notice, President Donald J. Trump reduced the sentence of Alice Marie Johnson, a 63-year-old woman serving a life sentence for a minor drug charge, in 2018.

The pair looked to be growing apart, with the 21-time Grammy winner spending most of his time at his ranch in Wyoming and Kardashian residing at their Calabasas house outside of Los Angeles.
