The Duchess of Cambridge met Mila Sneddon, a five-year-old fan with an incredible personal story, on Thursday during her royal visit of Scotland with husband Prince William. Mila, who is battling leukemia, was a participant in the duchess’ Hold Still photographic project, and her encounter with Kate had been planned for a long time.

Kate and the little girl chatted over the phone in August 2020.

Mila, who is now five, greets Middleton with “Good morning, Your Royal Highness,” says she knows her children’s names, and asks if she has a “princess costume.”

“I’m afraid I’m not wearing a princess costume right now, Mila,” Middleton answers, always truthful with kids. When she learns that the girl’s favorite color is pink, she comments, “I have to make sure I go and try to find myself a pink dress. Hopefully, when one day, hopefully, Mila, we’ll get to meet, and then I’ll remember to wear my pink dress for you .”

“Yay!” Mila exclaimed.

Mila was thrilled about the prospect of twinning with a royal in her favorite color, and when Kate arrived at the Palace of Holyroodhouse for their in-person meeting, she fulfilled her word and wore a gorgeous pink garment—specifically, a bubblegum pink color block skirt dress by Me+Em.

Sneddon chose a powder pink gown with a small tiara.

Scott and Lynda Sneddon, her father and mother, and her older sister Jodi all stood up. Kate complimented the young girl, who was decked out in pink from head to toe, with a matching crown headpiece, frock, and shoes.

“I want to give you a big, squeezy cuddle,” the mother of three told her. “I love your dress. Can you give it a twirl?”

Mila spun round for the future queen before running over to her father.

Shielding Mila, a photograph of her captured by her mother Lynda, was one of 100 pictures featured in the Duchess of Cambridge’s book Hold Still: A Portrait of Our Nation in 2020.

Mila’s snapshot showed the four-year-old, who was having treatment for acute lymphoblastic leukemia at the time, kissing a window as her father waited outside due to hospital visitation restrictions during the pandemic.

Mila and her family live near Falkirk, Scotland, so the royal couple’s current tour to the country presented the ideal chance for the two to meet.

They’re certainly making the most of being out and about and vaccinated. Middleton made a bright sartorial statement by borrowing another princess look: Diana’s blue power suit, as the married pair returned to the place where they fell in love.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge posted a cute video of the encounter on Instagram, along with footage of Mila learning she will be seeing Kate in person.

The Palace noted in the caption of the post:

“In the week prior to lockdown last year, Mila’s family took the difficult decision to isolate in different households to protect Mila, who at this point was only 4 months into her chemotherapy journey for leukaemia.

The Duchess spoke to Mila on the phone a few months ago following her image being selected as one of the final 100 for the #HoldStill2020 project – hoping one day that they’d meet and wear their pink dresses together.

Today, Mila and her family visited the Palace of Holyroodhouse to visit The Duchess for tea and a tour of the palace.”
