Judy Garland’s blue gingham dress from the 1939 film The Wizard of Oz sold for $1.56 million at an auction in New York on Monday.
The pinafore, one of ten said to have been produced for Garland in her role as Dorothy in the film, was predicted by Bonhams to earn between $800,000 and $1.2 million at its Hollywood memorabilia sale hosted in association with Turner Classic Movies.
The garment was described as having sweat stains around the neck but otherwise being in fair shape, and was thought to be one of only two such pinafores that Garland wore on-screen for the iconic musical. It was sold via telephone auction to an anonymous bidder.
The outfit, designed by MGM’s renowned costume designer Adrian, cost $1,565,000 in total, including commission.
After the hammer dropped, Catherine Williamson, Bonhams’ director of entertainment memorabilia, stated, “But the great pieces should bring a lot of money.”
In recent years, the value of iconic collectibles has skyrocketed.
The cowardly lion outfit worn in the film by actor Bert Lahr, which included a carved representation of Lahr’s face, sold for about $3.1 million at Bonhams just a year ago.
After being consigned and sold in 1981 by Kent Warner, an MGM costume designer who contributed with the famous 1970 MGM studio sale, the identical Wizard of Oz outfit was sold at auction for $490,000 in 2012.
Marilyn Monroe’s ivory pleated “Subway” dress from the 1955 film “The Seven Year Itch,” which fetched $5.6 million at auction in California in 2011, was the most expensive piece of movie memorabilia apparel ever sold.
Audrey Hepburn’s Ascot gown from My Fair Lady sold for $3.7 million.
At Monday’s auction, a 1963 Volkswagen Beetle stunt car featured in “Herbie Goes To Monte Carlo” sold for $86,250.
Liza Minnelli and Lorna Luft to celebrate Judy Garland with new fragrance
Liza Minnelli and Lorna Luft are introducing a new fragrance in honor of their late mother Judy Garland. The sisters, together with members of The Judy Garland Heirs Trust, have agreed to collaborate with beauty scientist Vince Spinnato of TurnKey Beauty, Inc. to create Judy – A Garland Fragrance.
Luft and Minnelli will collaborate with Spinnato to create ‘Judy,’ which will be inspired by some of their mother’s favorite scents, aromas, and perfumes but with a contemporary twist.
The unisex fragrance, dubbed ‘Judy’ – A Garland Fragrance by Vincenzo Spinnato, will be launched on June 10th, 2022, the 100th birthday of Ms. Garland.
“It shall be a unisex fragrance that captures the essence of Judy Garland and evokes reminiscences of our mom,” Luft said.
“It’s fantastic to give you the option to celebrate my mom’s legacy on this particular approach. She would have been thrilled!” Minnelli added.
Over the following 12 months, Spinnato and his colleagues aim to broadcast the creation process on social media, as well as insert three fragrance strips in publications and stores and enable people to vote for their favorite perfume.
Fans will be able to vote for one of three scent strips that will be featured in famous publications and in brick-and-mortar establishments where the scent will eventually dwell by scanning a QR Code or sending a text message.
Luft learned about Spinnato/TurnKey Beauty from a make-up artist in London who knew one of Spinnato’s U.S. clientele.
The perfumer added, “I’m a huge private fan of Judy Garland. To develop a fragrance for her with Lorna and Liza is past the rainbow! Our purpose is to respect Judy Garland’s reminiscence, assist protect her legacy and hopefully introduce her to a new technology of followers with this fragrance. Thus far, it is a fantastic, distinctive, collaborative effort between her household, property and me. Naturally, this can be very private for her daughters; and I’m honoured to be entrusted with this duty.”
