Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are busy establishing a new life in California, but that doesn’t mean they’ve severed all connections with the United Kingdom.

According to a source, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle contributed to the Sovereign Grant by paying millions for the leasing and repairs of Frogmore Cottage.

After departing from the royal family in March 2020, Markle, 39, and Harry, 36, allegedly paid five months’ rent for the house. They then paid a total of $3.3 million to cover the expenses, allowing them to use the house as their own until March 31, 2022.

“The payment covers all their current obligations,” Sir Michael Stevens, Keeper of the Privy Purse, said on Wednesday at the unveiling of an annual report into the taxpayer-funded Sovereign Grant, which supports the royal family’s public duties, according to People.

“We are confident that it represents a good outcome,” Stevens said of the contribution, which Harry and Meghan made as part of their preparations to become financially independent when they stand down from royal responsibilities in March 2020.

“The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have made a substantial contribution to the Sovereign Grant that covered the refurbishment costs of Frogmore Cottage,” Stevens said.

Frogmore Cottage served as Prince Harry and Meghan’s official home until March 31, 2020, when they ceased to be working royals for the Queen. They paid five months’ rent on the property before giving the $3.3 million lump payment.

Stevens also mentioned how the couple’s gift came at a time when money was scarce for royals due to the epidemic.

“It should also be remembered also that this payment has come in the current year at a time where our supplementary income has reduced dramatically,” he added, referring to the royal household’s 53 percent drop in tourism-related earnings as a consequence of the COVID epidemic. “[Harry and Meghan’s payment] has helped to offset the reduction that we would have seen.”

Princess Eugenie and her husband, Jack Brooksbank, moved there before the birth of their son, August. Meanwhile, whenever Prince Harry visits the United Kingdom, he lives there. It was there that he isolated himself in preparation for Prince Philip’s burial in April.

Along with Frogmore, the study reveals that Harry’s absence from frontline royal responsibilities has had an impact on the finances formerly supplied by his father, Prince Charles – a shift that the Duke memorably alluded to as being “cut off” during the couple’s March interview with Oprah Winfrey.

The former “Suits” actress and Harry now live in a $14 million mansion in Montecito, California, with their 2-year-old son Archie and their newborn daughter Lilibet.

The Duke of Sussex returned to Frogmore Cottage before the end of the month to attend the unveiling of Princess Diana’s monument on July 1.
