It’s ‘inevitable’ that Queen will lose monarchy in Australia amid referendum efforts

Following the former Prime Minister’s demand for a referendum, a Royal analyst has predicted that The Queen will lose the monarchy “one day” in Australia.

After Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s dramatic Oprah Winfrey interview, former Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull called for another referendum on the monarchy.

“Malcolm Turnbull was once the head of the republican movement in Australia,” Royal analyst Richard Fitzwilliams told Express UK. “But obviously it’s up to Australia what future they want.”

“In 1999, they voted to stay with the monarchy.

“For years there has been a very strong movement in Australia for a republic.

“Many considered it inevitable that will one day be what happened.

“But I don’t believe it’s because of a single interview, this must be something the Australian people will decide.”

Many who advocated for an independent Australian leader were dealt a major setback in 1999, when 54.87 percent of Australians opted to retain the Queen in a national referendum. However, numerous controversies, including Meghan Markle and Prince Harry standing down as senior royals and speaking out against their tenure with the Royal Family, have provided the campaign a boost 22 years later.

Another important aspect was last year’s Palace Letters saga, in which Professor Jenny Hocking effectively obtained a court order allowing decades-old correspondence from the National Archives of Australia to be published.

In the run-up to the Dismissal, the Queen, her private secretary, and then-Governor-General Sir John Kerr exchanged letters dating back to 1975.

The Dismissal was an Australian political crisis in which Prime Minister Gough Whitlam was dismissed and replaced by Leader of the Opposition Malcolm Fraser.

Years of debate followed about whether Sir John had the authority to do it and how much the Queen knew about it.

The Australian Republic Movement saw a surge in participation after the letters were published, and another, somewhat lower, peak after the Sussexes’ interview with Oprah Winfrey last month.

Mr Turnbull recently said on ABC television that Australia’s head of state should be an Australian resident rather than the king or queen of the United Kingdom.

“It’s clearly an unhappy family, or at least Meghan and Harry are unhappy. It seems very sad,” he said.

Mr Turnbull described the Queen as a “extraordinary” head of state, adding, “I think, frankly, in Australia, there are more Elizabethans than there are monarchists.”

“After the end of the Queen’s reign, that is the time for us to say – OK, we’ve passed that watershed and do we really want to have whoever happens to be head of state, the king or queen of the UK, automatically our head of state?”

According to a recent Deltapoll report, more than half of 18 to 24-year-olds want Prince Harry to succeed the Queen as King when she passes because he is the “preferred future monarch.” Despite standing down from royal duties and relocating to Los Angeles, 51 percent of respondents in the age bracket want the Duke to continue in the footsteps of the queen. Overall, 47% of the 1,590 adults surveyed want Prince William to succeed Prince Charles as King.

“Of course you’re going to vote for the person similar to you,” royal columnist Anna Musson told Australian morning show Sunrise.

“I think it’s a real blow for Prince Charles, he just can’t catch a break.

“The popularity status continues to come second to your son, it’s a bit of a blow but regardless of how you feel, it works by lineage and Prince Charles is going to be next.”

“Listen to the people!” said another correspondent.

“I think you’ve got to go with those that are staunch monarchists and they want to see the right people lead the Royal Family.

“Is this Prince Charles’ only chance to really win the people over again if he is King?

“But I say, Prince William.

“He has been trained from day one to take this job.”
