The psychological drama film Girl, Interrupted was released in theaters twenty years ago. It’s reasonable to assume that the movie has had a big influence on the film industry. It was Angelina Jolie’s first major part is in this picture, and was produced by (and stars) Winona Ryder. It is, in fact, the part that would propel the actor to prominence.

Angelina Jolie went on to win an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her part in Girl Interrupted, causing viewers to believe that the two starring females in the film had a wonderful relationship. According to a Forbes story, Winona Ryder said that the two aren’t pals in real life, despite the fact that she wanted to be friends with Angelina Jolie.

Angelina Jolie was an unknown actress trying to make it big in the 1990s before becoming the movie star she is today. Winona Ryder, on the other hand, had earned a reputation for herself after acting in Tim Burton’s “Edward Scissorhands,” and was now dabbling with producing, according to Forbes. She co-produced the psychological thriller released in 1999, alongside Angelina Jolie, whom she lobbied for inclusion in the film.

Critics have long credited Ryder’s casting with bringing Jolie to the attention of Hollywood, although she has expressed sadness that their relationship did not progress beyond co-stars.

Ryder was originally cast in the role of Lisa Rowe, played by Angelina Jolie. But the Edward Scissorhands actress was well aware that she wasn’t the appropriate fit for the character. “I knew from the outset that whoever played Lisa was going to get all the attention,” Ryder said of the award-winning performance to Empire Magazine. “At one point they asked if I wanted to play Lisa and I said, ‘No, I want to be Susanna.'” She had no regrets about casting Jolie in the character of the sophisticated psychopath, which she believed was great for her.

“There was no resentment,” Ryder explained. “When it came out, people almost felt bad for me. But I expected it all along. I was really happy with the film and really proud of it.” Jolie’s work ethic was also praised by the actress. “At the time I worked with her, she was battling her looks because she’s so beautiful,” she remarked of the Tomb Raider star. “She wanted very much to be taken seriously and not just judged on her looks. And she conquered that.”

Ryder first assumed she and Jolie would be excellent friends. When she discovered that the Maleficent star was not interested in being friends with her, she was unhappy.

Ryder told Showbiz Cheatsheet, “I remember thinking, ‘Oh, we’re going to turn out to be great friends,'”

“But I think she needed to be able to look at me just as the character Susanna, not as Winona. So in a very respectful way, she just kind of kept her distance.”

Despite knowing that she was cast on her request, Ryder informed the site that Angelina Jolie did not thank her for the part. That wasn’t Winona’s style, so she brushed it off. Furthermore, the actor stated that she worked really hard to get Angelina Jolie’s participation in the film.

“I fought very hard for her to have that part, and I never really felt like I got the chance to know her,” Ryder said in an interview with BlackBook Magazine (via The Guardian).

Ryder has always supported Angelina Jolie and her humanitarian efforts.
