Megan Fox Thinks Jennifer’s Body flopped due to “backlash” against her

Megan Fox, star of Jennifer’s Body, believes the horror comedy’s lack of box office success was due to her “image at the time” in the media and a “backlash” to it.

Fox is reflecting on one of her most memorable roles as she prepares to return to the horror genre with ‘Till Death.’ Jennifer’s Body, directed by Karyn Kusama and written by Diablo Cody, was released in 2009. It featured Fox as a high school student who begins to feed on her male friends in a strange way.

The 34-year-old spoke about the film’s loyal audience on Eli Roth’s History of Horror: Uncut podcast on Monday.

‘It’s a nice circle,’ she reflected. ‘ I didn’t expect it to grow like that. But to see it being appreciated now, obviously makes me feel really good. I’m happy for Diablo [Cody, writer] and I’m happy for Karyn [Kusama, director].’

‘All these people put in a lot of hard work into making a really quality project that was panned for reasons that had nothing to do with them. A lot of it was just about my image at the time and who I was in the media at the time and the backlash to that. The movie never really stood a chance.’

The actress said that her ‘sex symbol’ image in the media following her portrayal as Mikaela Banes in the Transformers movie led to some people having a poor view of her and the film, and also blamed the off-screen “fallout.”

“I was being vilified a little bit at that point when the movie was getting ready for its release, it was that interesting juxtaposition of shooting up to extreme heights of fame right before the movie was released and then… the tearing me down was starting to happen,” she said.

‘Then I had this immediate fallout with someone I worked in the industry. That happened right when I was on the press tour for Jennifer’s Body. I think it all sort of exploded at once. I think people definitely viewed me as negative or having bad intentions or just being really shallow and selfish, if it could be reduced and simplified even to that.’

Fox is most likely alluding to her infamous remarks on Michael Bay, in which he compared the filmmaker to Hitler. Her Transformers character was written out of the franchise as a result of her comments, and gave birth to a flurry of contradicting rumors regarding who made the decision to terminate her.

It’s also possible that the scandal impacted how many critics saw Jennifer’s Body. For many months in 2009, just as publicity for Jennifer’s Body was picking up, the public’s opinion of Fox was less than favorable. Some people criticized her comparison for being insensitive, while others criticized her work ethic. In 2014, Fox and Bay reconciled and worked together on Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and its sequel.

It’s possible that Fox’s public character clashed with her professional job at one point.

Fox expressed her delight that Jennifer’s body is rising in popularity, and that more people are recognizing the topics that Cody and Kusama intended to tackle, such as the difficulty of being an adolescent girl and the loss of innocence.

She explained, “Being a teenage girl is a very difficult thing to be. Not just with how other girls interact with you in school, or the expectations that are being put on you by the outside world and by the media, and the things that we see advertised and how we’re supposed to look and how we’re supposed to be, it’s just so much pressure.

“I think somewhere inside every girl they can relate to this idea of feeling like ‘My power has been taken away from me and what would I do if I got all that power and then some back.'”

In 2019, Meghan Fox appeared in films such as Zeroville, Above the Shadows, and The Battle of Jangsari. The actor was last seen in Gil Junger’s Think Like A Dog and M. J. Bassett’s Rogue. In the near future, Meghan will appear in a number of films, including Big Gold Brick, Naya Legend of the Golden Dolphins, Midnight in the Switchgrass, and Till Death.
