According to Elton John, Princess Diana had quite an effect on men.

The singer recalls a party he once hosted where stars Richard Gere and Sylvester Stallone almost came to blows over Princess Diana in his biography. The London party was thrown for former Walt Disney Studios head Jeffrey Katzenberg.

“The most peculiar scene developed. Straight away, Richard Gere and Diana seemed very taken with each other,” Elton recounted in an excerpt from ‘Me: Elton John Official Autobiography.’

“She was separated from Charles by this point, and Richard had broken up with Cindy Crawford. They ended up sitting in front of the fireplace together, locked in rapt conversation.

“As the rest of us chatted, I couldn’t help notice a strange atmosphere in the room. Judging by the kind of looks he kept shooting them, Diana and Richard Gere’s newly blossoming friendship was not going down well with Sylvester Stallone at all.

“I think he may have turned up to the party with the express intention of picking Diana up, only to find his plans for the evening ruined.”

Diana was a close friend of Elton John’s, and after her death in 1997, he re-recorded and dedicated his song “Candle in the Wind” to her. The dinner party anecdote he recites in the book takes place three or four years earlier.

When it came time for dinner, John recalls that his now-husband David Furnish spotted Gere and Stallone “squaring up to each other, apparently about to settle their differences over Diana by having a fist-fight.”

Stallone was enraged and walked out after dinner, despite David’s efforts to defuse the situation by pretending he hadn’t observed the drama.

Stallone stormed out when Diana and Gere began their courting after dinner.

According to John, Stallone yelled, “I never would have come if I’d known Prince f- -kin’ Charming was gonna to be here.”

“If I’d wanted her, I would’ve taken her!” the actor added.

Diana, who died in a vehicle accident in Paris in 1997, was completely unaware of the situation, according to Elton and David, who though it was hilarious.

He said: “We managed to wait until his car was out of sight before we started laughing. Back in our living room, Diana and Richard Gere were still gazing raptly at each other. She seemed completely unruffled.”

“Maybe she hadn’t realized what was happening. Or maybe stuff like that happened all the time,” John writes.
