It didn’t take much for Ryan Reynolds to persuade Brad Pitt to appear in Deadpool 2.

He just requested over a cup of coffee.

Pitt makes an unexpected cameo as The Vanisher, the meta-superhero’s ally, in the ‘Deadpool’ sequel.

Vanisher was one of the titular character’s invisible X-Force allies, a gang of mutant rogues gathered by Wade Wilson to rescue a little child from the ruthless Cable. Vanisher’s face was revealed to be Pitt’s at the scene where the X-Force’s parachute dropped.

“Deadpool 2” grossed a whopping $125 million in its first weekend, confirming Ryan Reynolds’ R-rated superhero movie is a box office force to be reckoned with. While the hundreds of fans who watched the film expected all of the brutal action sequences and meta criticism, it’s safe to say no one expected Brad Pitt to make an epic cameo appearance.

On Saturday at Comic-Con in San Diego, California, the 41-year-old actor, along with the cast and crew of the blockbuster franchise, chatted with ET’s Kevin Frazier about the film and its numerous cameos.

“Brad Pitt said he’d do it if Ryan personally delivered a cup of coffee from Starbucks, right?” asked ‘Deadpool 2’ co-writer Rhett Reese.

“Sort of embellished. I was told all he wants is a cup of coffee and I said, ‘Like a franchise or just one individual cup of coffee?’ And I was told one individual cup of coffee, which was really his way of saying, ‘I’m doing it for nothing.’ And it was a total solid and the nicest thing anyone could do,” Reynolds answered.

Reynolds described how he persuaded Pitt to make a brief appearance in “Deadpool 2” in an interview shortly after the film’s release. Reynolds claims he wrote a handwritten letter to Pitt to propose the concept and convince him to say yes.

“I just wrote him a letter, and explained what it was we were doing,” said Reynolds. “And the sort of premise behind it was how do we, what’s the most wasteful way to use the biggest movie star in the world? And it was through a character that is largely invisible and worthless throughout the movie,” he added.

Reynolds claimed that Pitt was eager to perform the cameo right away. “And I guess Brad found that funny, we all found that funny,” said Reynolds. “And he said yes. And the next thing you know he came and shot for about seven minutes.”

The whole franchise is unique, with the eponymous character often lampooning standard superhero cliches and even breaching the fourth wall to address the viewer directly. According to Deadpool 2 director David Leitch, the film’s distinctiveness – and success – is the only reason such a cameo could happen.

“I knew both of those guys and I worked with them before, but they would have never done a cameo in a movie I directed if it wasn’t Deadpool,” Leitch told ET. “There’s such a… beloved feeling for the things you guys created in the first one that it was an easy ask.”

“Deadpool 2” was shot from June 2017 to October 2017, at which time the SAG-AFTRA daily minimum wage for an actor was $933 (June 2017) or $956 (October 2017). (July 2017 and on). Pit’s pay for the sequel is dependent on when he filmed his role, but working for scale means he made less than $1,000.

“We shot in about a half an hour,” Reese said of Pitt filming the cameo. “It was quite a production. It was like a full crew for a half an hour, and Brad agreed to do it for scale, plus a cup of coffee. And then he was really specific about the coffee. He said, ‘I want this exact coffee from Starbucks, and, Ryan, I want you to deliver it to me.’”

“We got the coffee, Ryan came in and gave it to him,” he continued. “It was hilarious because he kind of forgotten that he asked for it. It was really funny. And then we shot it in about a half an hour.”
