When a show is titled “Scream Queens,” it would seem that screaming would be part of the actors involved.

The Women’s Health November cover star, Lea Michele tells the magazine that, with creator Ryan Murphy‘s blessing, she instituted a no-screaming policy for herself on the set of the Fox show in order to preserve her singing voice.

Scream Queens is a horror comedy about a series of murders on a college campus.

Although Michele acknowledges she is often up for anything in terms of acting, she drew the line at the prospect of potentially harming her voice by screaming during the production.

“I refuse to scream on the show,” she tells Women’s Health. “Ryan got me in a (recording) booth one day, and I told him ‘I’m screaming like twice and then you’re going to have to use it the whole season,’ because I’m a singer, and I was there with Ariana Grande and we were like, ‘We can’t scream, this is our gift.’

“So I don’t scream, they just dub it in. But they say I do a really good scream face without having to scream.”

Michele, who began her career on Broadway, plays nerdy, twisted sorority pledge (and makeover project) Hester Ulrich on the slasher comedy – a role which the 29-year-old tells says she was “excited” to take on.

“The cast is incredible, the scripts are so funny, they’re also really scary,” she says. “I couldn’t be happier right now. It’s really such an amazing blessing.”

The former Glee star has gotten used to one aspect of the horror genre: being “scared constantly.”

“We did this one scene where I was like buried up to my neck,” she said, referencing a scene in the show’s pilot episode that involves a lawnmower and decapitation. “We literally were in tubes underground with just our heads popping out and it was so scary. If you’re claustrophobic – I legitimately had spiders crawling up my face because it was the lawn. These huge spiders and Ryan Murphy would have to come and whack them off my face.”

“Scream Queens” airs Tuesdays at 9 p.m. on Fox.
